What is Intervention?

Simply put, reading intervention is noticing a child who finds reading difficult, and providing help for him or her. This help is often given individually or in a small group of students with similar needs. In most cases, the classes are held in the reading teacher’s classroom.

Students are selected for intervention based on their scores from a variety of assessments. Information from these tests will be used to determine focus areas for instruction during the reading support sessions. Students will get extra help with the main concepts they need to be able to read well: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

Student progress is checked on a regular basis. If support is no longer needed, it is discontinued.  Parent support is crucial to the success of the program.
